How to Keep American Airlines Miles From Expiring in 2026: The 24 Month Rule and the Cheapest Fixes

How do you keep American Airlines miles from expiring? Earn or redeem at least one mile every 24 months. Any qualifying activity moves the expiry date of your whole balance to 24 months from that day. The cheapest fixes are a purchase through American’s shopping portal, a meal in its dining program, or a $5 transfer of 1,000 miles to another member. Two groups are exempt: members under 21, and the primary holder of an AAdvantage credit card while the card is open. If the miles have already expired, American will sell them back for up to 24 months.

What Counts as Qualifying Activity

The terms list three things:

  1. Redeeming any AAdvantage award, or earning miles on purchases with American or its partner airlines.
  2. Completing a Buy Miles, Gift Miles or Transfer Miles transaction.
  3. Earning miles with hotels, car rental companies, credit cards and other partners.

One mile is enough: the terms set no minimum amount. What the terms do not mention is also worth knowing:

  • Logging in does nothing.
  • Donating miles is not named in the terms or on American’s donation page. One Mile at a Time reported that a 1,000 mile donation reset the date at once, in a guide last updated in 2023. Treat it as likely, not certain, and check your date afterward.
  • Receiving a transfer is not addressed. The terms speak of completing a transfer, which is the sender’s act.
  • A Basic Economy flight bought on or after December 17, 2025 earns no miles, so it earns no activity either. That is my reading of the terms; American does not spell it out.

Who Is Exempt

Primary AAdvantage credit cardmembers

American’s credit card terms say the 24 month requirement does not apply to the primary cardmember, and the FAQ adds the condition: while the card account stays open. A newly approved card can take up to 24 hours to show on the account. If you close the card, you need earning or redeeming activity within four months of closing, or within 24 months of your last activity, whichever is later. American’s wording covers the primary cardmember only. Citi has been the sole issuer of AAdvantage cards since April 24, 2026, when the Barclays Aviator cards moved over, The Points Guy reported.

Members under 21

The rule does not apply until you turn 21. After that you need activity within 24 months of your 21st birthday. The exemption depends on a valid date of birth in the profile, so check that a child’s account has one.

What Changed in 2025 and 2026

  • December 17, 2025: Basic Economy tickets bought from this date earn no miles or Loyalty Points.
  • March 1, 2026: the current terms took effect. The 24 month rule is unchanged.
  • March 2026: American began letting members redeem miles for gift cards. Redeeming an award is qualifying activity under the terms, though American has not said in so many words that a gift card counts.
  • April 24, 2026: Citi became the only AAdvantage card issuer.
  • October 2, 2026: American announced cash and miles bookings. Its terms for the feature set a 500 mile minimum on American flights within the contiguous 48 states, excluding Basic Economy.

If you have less than a month left

Partner activity is the slow kind. American’s FAQ says partner transactions usually post within 30 days and sometimes take longer. With a deadline close, use something that happens inside American’s own systems: a transfer, a small purchase of miles, or an award redemption. Then log in and confirm that the date has moved.

If you forgot to add your number to a recent flight

A flight from the past 12 months can still be credited, and that credit is earning activity. The steps are in can I claim airline miles from old flights.

How to Check Your Expiry Date

Log in at aa.com and open your AAdvantage account. American’s FAQ says the account shows your balance and the earliest date any of the miles could expire. American does not say that it sends a warning email before the date, so put a reminder in your own calendar. If you hold the card, the account should show no expiry date.

If Your Miles Have Already Expired

American will reactivate them for a fee. The rules, from American’s reactivation page and its fee schedule:

  • You have 24 months from the date they expired.
  • The limit is 500,000 miles.
  • The fee runs from $60 to $2,000 per transaction, depending on the number of miles.
  • You get one transaction per expiry period. Miles from that period that you leave out are gone.
  • You can do it online or by phone, and processing takes up to 24 hours.
  • Reactivated miles do not count toward status.

American does not publish the price steps. AwardWallet lists figures collected in 2022: $60 for 5,000 miles, $225 for 25,000, $400 for 50,000 and $700 for 100,000. On those numbers the cost is 0.7 to 1.2 cents a mile, against the 1.45 cents The Points Guy puts on an American mile in October 2026. Paying makes sense for a balance you have a real use for. A Second Rule: Account Closure

Separate from expiry, the terms let American close an account for inactivity when all four of these are true: no earning or redeeming for 36 months in a row, a balance of zero, no AAdvantage credit card open on the account, and no status or lifetime benefits. An account opened in the past 24 months can be closed after 12 months with no activity. A closed account cannot be reopened.

How American Compares

Among the large US programs, American is the only one where miles expire for inactivity. Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue miles do not expire, per NerdWallet (August 2026). Atmos Rewards points do not expire either, but an account with no activity for two years can be locked.
