Can you sell hotel points? Not within the rules of any major hotel program. I read the terms of 25 hotel loyalty programs, and every one that I could read either prohibits selling points outright or bars transferring the points, rewards or membership; the penalty is usually a closed account and lost points. What many programs do allow is moving points to another member for free: Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Choice, Best Western, Radisson, Sonesta and Meliá all do, and IHG does for a fee. The Points King buys Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG points, and I set out the risk of doing that below.
I am Joseph Hellman-Benjamin, and I have run The Points King since 2017. We buy points, so I have an interest in this subject and you should read what follows with that in mind. There are no affiliate links on this site. Each program below links to its own official terms page, so you can check the wording yourself.

Why Hotel Programs Ban Selling Points
Hotel points are a liability on the hotel company’s books, and the company controls what they can be used for. The terms make the points the program’s property, not yours, which is what lets a program cancel them. In practice, programs look for patterns such as an award booked for a stranger, points pooled into an unrelated account, or one account booking many unrelated guests. When a program acts, it usually closes the account and cancels every point in it, not only the points that were sold.
Better Options Before You Sell
- Book for someone else. Most programs let you book a reward night in another guest’s name. That is usually allowed where selling is not.
- Share or pool with family. Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Choice, Best Western, Radisson, Sonesta and Meliá let members move points to each other, mostly for free.
- Transfer to an airline. Most large programs convert points to airline miles. The rate is usually poor, but it can top up an account for one award.
- Keep the account alive. Expiry rules run from 6 months (Hard Rock, Caesars) to never (Best Western). One small stay or purchase often resets the clock.
You can compare what points in different programs are worth with our hotel points value calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell my Hilton points?
Not under Hilton’s terms, which say the sale of points “other than by Hilton Honors is expressly prohibited.” Hilton does let you pool or transfer points to other members for free.
Can I sell my Marriott points?
Not under Marriott’s terms, which prohibit selling or transferring points except as the program allows. Marriott lets members transfer up to 100,000 points a year to another member for free.
Is selling hotel points illegal?
I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. The issue the terms raise is a breach of the program rules, with the program able to cancel the points and close the account. Read our guide to the risks of selling miles and points.
Which hotel points does The Points King buy?
Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt and IHG One Rewards. The full list, with airline and bank programs, is on the sell points page.
Which hotel points never expire?
Best Western Rewards points do not expire. Elite members of IHG and Choice keep their points while they hold status.
