How to Redeem AA Miles in 2026: Flights, Upgrades, Gift Cards and Cash

By Joseph Hellman-Benjamin, Founder and CEO of The Points King. Last updated: November 1, 2026. Editorial Policy

You can redeem AA miles for flights, upgrades, hotels, car rentals, Admirals Club membership, merchandise and, since March 12, 2026, gift cards. There is no official way to turn American Airlines AAdvantage miles into cash. Flights on partner airlines are still the best use, because American keeps a fixed partner award chart: 57,500 miles one way in business class to Europe, for example. Gift cards return 0.5 to 0.7 cents a mile and merchandise less than that, against the 1.45 cents The Points Guy says an AAdvantage mile is worth in October 2026.

I have run The Points King since 2017, and AAdvantage miles are one of the currencies we buy. So I have a stake in the cash question, and I answer it near the end, including the part where American’s terms forbid selling. Everything before that is about getting the most from the miles inside the program.

What AA Miles Can Be Redeemed For in 2026

Option What it costs or returns Source
Flights on partner airlines Fixed chart. Business class to Europe is 57,500 miles one way The Points Guy, September 2026
Flights on American Dynamic pricing, from 7,500 miles one way The Points Guy, September 2026
Upgrades Dynamic pricing, a little under 1 cent per mile One Mile at a Time, June 2025
Hotels, cars, cruises and vacations About 1 cent per mile or less The Points Guy, September 2026
Admirals Club membership 1 cent per mile: 75,000 miles or $750 for a single membership American Airlines
Gift cards 0.5 to 0.7 cents per mile AwardWallet and Upgraded Points, March 2026
Merchandise through AAdvantage Exchange About 0.3 to 0.6 cents per mile One Mile at a Time and AwardWallet, August 2025
Cash No official option AAdvantage terms

For comparison, the published valuations of an AAdvantage mile are 1.45 cents at The Points Guy, 1.7 cents at NerdWallet and 1.4 cents at Upgraded Points, all for October 2026. Any redemption that returns less than about 1.4 cents is below what the same miles could get you on a flight.

From the partner chart (The Points Guy, September 2026). Europe economy drops to 22,500 miles in the off-peak months. Partner awards are the fixed-chart exception: flights on American itself are priced dynamically, from 7,500 miles one way.

What Changed for AAdvantage Redemptions in 2025 and 2026

  • Cash and miles is rolling out. American announced on October 2, 2026 that eligible members will be able to split the price of a flight between cash and miles on aa.com and in its app, rolling out over the following weeks. It has not said what each mile is worth in that mix.
  • Hawaiian Airlines joined oneworld on April 22, 2026, so its flights can be booked with AAdvantage miles as a partner, though award space may take time to appear on aa.com, per One Mile at a Time.
  • Gift cards arrived. American announced on March 12, 2026 that members can redeem miles for gift cards in $10 to $500 denominations at aadvantagegiftcards.com.
  • The upgrade chart is gone. American launched “instant upgrades” with dynamic mileage pricing in June 2025 and stopped taking requests under the old fixed chart on August 12, 2025, per One Mile at a Time.
  • Business class on American’s own flights costs more. One Mile at a Time reported in July 2025 that the lowest business class awards on American-operated flights to Europe now typically start at 75,000 miles, up from 57,500. Partner awards were not changed.
  • Some Japan Airlines awards went up without notice. Since about July 2026, connecting itineraries on Japan Airlines have priced at 80,000 miles in business class and 100,000 in first, View from the Wing reported. Nonstop Japan Airlines flights still price at 60,000 and 80,000. American has not updated its published chart.
  • Admirals Club pricing changed. From August 23, 2026, a single membership is $750 or 75,000 miles, on American’s membership page.
  • Citi points now transfer in. Citi ThankYou points have transferred to AAdvantage at 1:1 since July 27, 2025, from the Strata Elite, Strata Premier and Prestige cards, The Points Guy reported.
  • Basic economy stopped earning. Basic economy tickets bought on or after December 17, 2025 earn no miles and no Loyalty Points, per AwardWallet.

Partner Award Flights: The Best Value

American prices its own flights dynamically, but most flights on partner airlines still follow a fixed chart. These are the one-way prices from the contiguous US and Canada, as The Points Guy listed them on September 12, 2026.

To Economy Premium economy Business First
Europe 30,000 (22,500 off-peak) 40,000 57,500 85,000
Asia Region 1, including Japan 35,000 50,000 60,000 80,000
Asia Region 2 37,500 50,000 70,000 110,000
Middle East 40,000 62,500 70,000 115,000

Three things to know before you search:

  • Partner pricing applies when any segment of the trip is flown by a partner. One Mile at a Time notes that adding a partner segment can bring a 75,000-mile business class award to Europe back down to 57,500.
  • Fiji Airways and Air Tahiti Nui are exceptions and price dynamically.
  • Awards on British Airways flights often carry high taxes and fees. Compare the cash due before you book.

Flights on American

American dropped its fixed chart for its own flights in 2023. The price in miles now moves with the date, the departure time and how far ahead you book. AAdvantage says its flights start at 7,500 miles each way, and lower prices show up occasionally. Domestic first class starts around 15,000 miles, according to point.me. Flexible dates matter more than anything else here: the same route can price very differently from one day to the next.

Upgrades With Miles

Upgrades are now offered at a price in miles or in cash on your existing booking, with no co-pay chart. The Points Guy gives an example of an upgrade offered at 63,900 miles or $584, which is about 0.91 cents per mile, and Main Cabin Extra seats at 7,300 to 8,300 miles against $70 to $80. That is under what the miles are worth on an award flight, so pay cash for small upgrades and keep the miles.

Gift Cards, Hotels, Cars and Admirals Club

Gift cards. American’s gift card site launched in March 2026 with brands that include Sephora, Nike and Best Buy. AwardWallet priced a $25 card at 5,000 miles for a regular member, which is 0.5 cents a mile, and at 3,570 miles for an elite member who holds an AAdvantage card, about 0.7 cents. Upgraded Points also found that the value tops out at about 0.7 cents. I would use this only for a small leftover balance that cannot reach a flight.

Merchandise. You can redeem AAdvantage miles for merchandise through AAdvantage Exchange, a catalog of about 4,800 products from more than 100 brands that opened in August 2025, One Mile at a Time reported. It is the weakest value on this page. One Mile at a Time priced four items at 0.27 to 0.63 cents a mile. AwardWallet found a $240 television at 86,400 miles, about 0.27 cents a mile, or 64,800 miles for an Executive Platinum member, about 0.37 cents. At those rates 50,000 miles buys roughly $150 to $300 of goods, where the same miles are worth about $725 at The Points Guy’s valuation. More on the general question in should you redeem miles for merchandise.

Hotels and cars. AAdvantage Hotels returns about 1 cent per mile and sometimes half that, AwardWallet reports. point.me found one hotel at 12,200 miles against $118 in cash. You do not need a card or status to redeem.

Admirals Club. Membership and day passes are priced at exactly 1 cent per mile: $750 or 75,000 miles for a single membership, and $79 or 7,900 miles for a one-day pass.

Can You Redeem AA Miles for Cash?

Not through American. The program has no cash-out option, and its terms say rewards “cannot be sold, advertised for sale or bartered.”

Brokers, including The Points King, buy AAdvantage miles for cash. Selling them is against American’s AAdvantage terms and conditions, which say miles transferred for cash are void and that American can forfeit the balance and terminate the account. Read the risks of selling miles and points first, then see what AAdvantage miles sell for.

How I Would Spend a Balance

  • Under 15,000 miles: a short American flight, which starts at 7,500 miles one way. A gift card is the fallback if no flight fits.
  • 30,000 to 60,000 miles: partner economy to Europe at 30,000 miles one way, or 22,500 off-peak.
  • 60,000 miles and up: partner business class. 57,500 to Europe and 60,000 to Japan on a nonstop are the two prices I would look at first.
  • No trip planned: keep the account active. Miles expire after 24 months with no qualifying activity; the fixes are in how to keep American Airlines miles from expiring.

Rules and Fees

Rule Detail
Expiration After 24 months with no qualifying activity. Members under 21 are exempt under American’s terms. AwardWallet reports that primary holders of AAdvantage credit cards are also exempt
Cancelling an award Free before departure, and the miles go back to your account, per The Points Guy and AwardWallet
Changing an award Sources disagree on what can be changed online. Plan on cancelling and rebooking
Buying miles 3.5 cents per mile before tax, per One Mile at a Time in July 2026. That is more than double what a mile is worth

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you redeem AA miles for gift cards?

Yes. Since March 12, 2026, American lets members redeem miles for gift cards in $10 to $500 denominations at aadvantagegiftcards.com. The value is 0.5 to 0.7 cents per mile, depending on your status and whether you hold an AAdvantage card.

Can you redeem AA miles for merchandise?

Yes, through AAdvantage Exchange, which opened in August 2025. Expect about 0.3 to 0.6 cents per mile, the lowest value of any AAdvantage redemption.

Can you redeem AA miles for cash?

No. American has no cash-out option, and the AAdvantage terms prohibit selling or bartering miles.

How many AA miles do you need for a free flight?

American says its own flights start at 7,500 miles one way. Partner flights to Europe start at 22,500 miles one way in off-peak economy. Taxes and fees are extra.

Do AA miles expire?

Yes, after 24 months with no qualifying activity. Members under 21 are exempt.

Can you pay with cash and miles on American Airlines?

Yes, on more and more bookings. American began rolling out a cash and miles option in October 2026 on aa.com and in its app, starting with US domestic flights outside Alaska and Hawaii: a slider at checkout applies miles to a cash fare. American has not said what each mile is worth in that mix, so compare it with the price of a full award before you use it.

Is there a fee to cancel an AA award ticket?

No. American removed award redeposit and change fees in November 2020. Cancel before departure and the miles are returned.

Can you use AA miles on other airlines?

Yes. AAdvantage miles book flights on American’s partners, including British Airways, Japan Airlines and Qatar Airways, at the fixed partner chart prices. Before you book Qatar Airways, check the current Middle East flight disruptions and waivers.

What is the best way to redeem AA miles?

Partner business class awards at fixed prices, such as 57,500 miles one way to Europe. Gift cards, hotels and upgrades return 1 cent per mile or less.
